With a birthday on Independence Day, Julian Dawson was destined to be influenced by Americana. He went straight from art college into music, spending his formative years touring mostly in Europe, building up a fan base that led to major record deals in Germany rather than in his native England. He made two albums for Polydor and five for BMG. Most of his recent CDs have been available in the USA and Canada.

A growing reputation among colleagues, constant touring and some fine subsequent recordings (alone and with Iain Matthews’ Plainsong), have helped to spread the word. If you can judge a man by the company he keeps, then Julian Dawson’s speaks for itself. A glance through his CD credits reveals the presence of such as Lucinda Williams, (who duetted on the smoky ‘How Can I Sleep Without You’), to Richard Thompson, Dan Penn, Vince Gill and The Roches. 2002’s CD ‘Hillbilly Zen’ was recorded with ex-Byrds multi-instrumentalist Gene Parsons, while his latest release, ’Deep Rain’, was made in Nashville with soul legend Dan Penn producing and co-writing and a hand-picked team of players.

In the end it is the songs, the voice and the charisma that have given Dawson such a long and varied career. The music is a melodic and highly individual blend of the best elements of folk, country and blues with an unmistakable tinge of pop…. and great lyrics.
